FONJALLAZ Special exhibition
The fight for freedom of association February to September 2024

With “FONJALLAZ”, the Masonic Museum Switzerland presents its first special exhibition. It is dedicated to the anti-Masonic initiative of the fascist Arthur Fonjallaz and documents the referendum of 28 November 1937.

Switzerland is the only country in the world in which Freemasonry was legitimised by the rejection of a popular initiative with a two-thirds majority.

Find out more about the background to the anti-Masonic propaganda during the campaign at the time, which was dominated by the rise of fascism, and about the activities of the defence committee. The defence committee not only fought for the survival of Freemasonry in Switzerland, but also for the preservation of democratic values such as freedom of association.

The exhibition is based on the research work of Dominique Alain Freymond and Christoph Meister. Staged by Manfred Vollenwyder, numerous original documents are on display, mainly from the archives of the Grand Lodge of Switzerland “ALPINA” and the lodges “Modestia Cum Libertate” (Zurich) and “Zur Brudertreue” (Aarau).
