Joël Gregogna, who does not claim to possess THE truth about Corto Maltese, provides in Corto l’initié a series of keys to immerse oneself in this symbolic world, leaving it up to the reader to decide whether to subscribe to the explanations or reject them, whether to follow the path taken or ignore it. A rejection would be regrettable, however, because once the reader is immersed in this exciting read, they will find ways to discover this magical work – knowing that it can also be taken in small bites to give themselves time to savour it. Because, as Didier Convard, who wrote the foreword, noted: ‘Joël Gregogna has sought out all the keys that Hugo Pratt has left here and there in the course of his hero’s adventures. Beautiful golden keys that open the huge doors of dreams. Dreams are the last continents on which humanist adventurers still ride a few fantasies and give readers the feeling of sharing their secrets.’
