Comics and Freemasonry

12.04.2025 - 28.06.2026

Seven approaches to Freemasonry in a selection of comics from 1981 to the present day.

This exhibition presents an extract from a collection of over 200 French-language comic strips that deal with Freemasonry, either explicitly or more symbolically. It demystifies the Order by presenting stories that explore Masonic symbols, rituals and values from a more accessible and less sensationalist perspective.
The comic strip format, with its mix of text and images, helps to popularise complex concepts and make them understandable to a wide audience, including the uninitiated.

The exhibition is structured around large explanatory posters on:

  • A history of comics starting with the Genevan Rodolphe Töppfer
  • The stages involved in making a comic strip
  • Some scriptwriters and illustrators: Hugo Pratt, the teams around Willy Vassaux and Didier Convard, Arnaud de la Croix and François Morel
  • Seven different approaches to Freemasonry in French-language comics, with many examples: furtive, humanist, historical, detective, esoteric, conspiracy and humorous

The exhibition is rounded off by 40 original comic strips, from Fable de Venise (1981) to the graphic novel Grand Orient (2020), as well as masonic humour drawings by François Morel and Jiho. Finally, a presentation, based on excerpts from the comic strip, answers seven questions from the general public about Freemasonry.
A brochure in French and German will be on sale, with articles by Dominique Alain Freymond, Arnaud de la Croix, Joël Gregogna, Jack Chaboud and an interview with Didier Convard.
